A purported video showing Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh slapping a man during a road inspection has triggered a political confrontation, with former Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal and the minister trading accusations in videos posted on Monday.
Both leaders blamed the other side for the altercation and cautioned against taking the public mandate for granted, escalating the controversy into a wider political exchange.
Kejriwal used the incident to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to connect with Gen Z, arguing that such outreach would have little impact without government action on issues affecting young people.
In a self-recorded video shared on his official X account, Kejriwal said the Prime Minister was attempting to engage with Gen Z through various initiatives, including social media reels and participation in religious programmes, but had not succeeded in connecting with the youth.
Kejriwal alleged that there were instructions from the higher levels of government to protect Parvesh Sahib Singh and accused the authorities of shielding the minister despite the slapping incident. He claimed that action against the minister and contractors allegedly responsible for poor road construction would help build public confidence among young people.
The PWD Minister responded with a video of his own, rejecting Kejriwal’s description of the man involved as a Gen Z youth. Singh alleged that the man was associated with the AAP and described him as a “goon” linked to one of the party’s MLAs.
Singh further alleged that the man had a criminal record and had previously been booked in a case involving an assault on a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) worker. He also claimed that the nephew of AAP MLA Jarnail Singh was named in the FIR and had been briefly arrested along with others. These allegations were made by the minister in his video.
The minister said he had no objection to Kejriwal visiting the site in Tilak Nagar where the confrontation took place, but cautioned the AAP leadership against spreading rumours or using pressure tactics.
Warning against alleged attempts to intimidate civic workers, Singh said that anyone trying to coerce MCD employees or demand commissions from them would face consequences.
Clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident, the minister said he had been inspecting development works and addressing concerns raised by local residents and the area’s AAP legislator. He accused the previous AAP government of focusing on theatrics rather than governance during its tenure.
The exchange has brought the alleged slapping incident into the centre of a political dispute, with both leaders offering sharply contrasting accounts of the confrontation and its wider implications.
