Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Media In-charge Baltej Singh Pannu on Monday said the Punjab Police handled the situation at Lovely Professional University (LPU) with restraint and professionalism, asserting that the safety of students remained the state government’s top priority.
Addressing a press conference, Pannu said the situation was sensitive as it involved students from Punjab, other states and foreign countries. He urged people to allow the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the incidents at LPU and Chitkara University to complete its investigation and establish the facts.
“Punjab has become an important education hub, with students coming here from across India and from other countries. A large number of students from Jammu and Kashmir, especially girls pursuing nursing and other courses, study in Punjab’s universities and colleges. Their safety and security are extremely important for us,” Pannu said.
Referring to the highway blockade during the unrest, he claimed that police did not use batons or pellet guns against the protesting students and instead handled the situation professionally.
He said Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had directed Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav to personally visit LPU and assess the situation. According to Pannu, the DGP visited the university, while senior police officers engaged with students and student leaders to understand their concerns and restore order.
Pannu said the state government had constituted an SIT to investigate the incidents, examine the allegations and determine the circumstances surrounding the unrest.
“We should allow the SIT to complete its investigation. Whatever information emerges will be shared with the people through senior Punjab Police officers and the government,” he said, adding that the findings would establish the complete facts and help determine responsibility on the basis of evidence.
The AAP leader also accused opposition parties of politicising the matter, saying that the situation required sensitivity and a focus on student safety. He criticised opposition leaders for their remarks and alleged that they were more interested in creating controversy than supporting efforts to restore peace.
Responding to videos circulating on social media that purportedly showed outsiders carrying weapons entering the university, Pannu said senior police officers had clarified that the individuals shown were not unidentified attackers. He said police had removed them from the situation until their presence could be verified.
Pannu reiterated that the government would ensure the concerns of students were heard, regardless of whether they came from Punjab, other parts of India or abroad.
“CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has made it clear that no miscreant will be allowed to disturb the environment of educational institutions in Punjab,” he said.
He added that while the government was committed to a fair investigation and the safety of students, those found responsible for vandalism and damage to property would face legal action.
Pannu said the government would continue to monitor the situation and keep the public informed as the SIT investigation progressed.
