An IndiGo flight from Guwahati to Bengaluru experienced an “Abnormal Runway Contact” during its second landing attempt at Kempegowda International Airport amid gusty weather, with airport sources indicating that the aircraft’s tail struck the runway.
IndiGo flight 6E 6542 had reportedly executed a go-around during its initial approach before attempting to land again. During the second approach, the aircraft made abnormal contact with the runway.
An IndiGo spokesperson said the aircraft experienced the abnormal runway contact while landing in gusty weather. All passengers and crew members were safe and disembarked without incident.
“In line with standard operating procedures, all relevant authorities were informed and the aircraft is undergoing maintenance checks,” the airline said, adding that it would resume operations only after securing the necessary clearances.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident. The aircraft has been taken for maintenance checks as part of the post-incident procedures.
To minimise disruption to its schedule, IndiGo arranged an alternate aircraft for the affected plane’s subsequent Bengaluru-Coimbatore service.
The incident comes days after another IndiGo aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying more than 250 passengers, returned to London’s Heathrow Airport shortly after departing for Delhi following a reported technical issue.
An emergency was declared and the aircraft was given priority to land at Heathrow. Reports said the pilots detected smoke on board after take-off and decided to turn back. All passengers subsequently disembarked safely.
Flight-tracking data showed the London-Delhi flight, 6E4, returned to Heathrow about an hour after departure. IndiGo did not disclose the precise nature of the technical problem, saying only that the safety of its customers, crew and aircraft remained its top priority.
The Bengaluru incident remains under regulatory investigation, and the cause of the abnormal runway contact has not yet been established.
