At least five people were killed and six others injured after a passenger vehicle skidded off the Teetwal–Simari road and plunged into the Kishenganga River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.
Officials said the accident occurred in the Simari area of Karnah, a border region of Kupwara district.
The injured were initially shifted to the Sub-District Hospital in Tangdhar for treatment and were subsequently referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Handwara. The identities of those killed and injured were being ascertained.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
In a post on X, Sinha said, “Deeply pained by the loss of lives in an unfortunate road accident in Kupwara. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the early recovery of the injured. I have directed the District Administration to ensure best possible treatment to the injured.”
Road safety remains a major concern in Jammu and Kashmir, where overspeeding and reckless driving have been identified as significant contributors to fatal accidents. Sudden overtaking, aggressive manoeuvres and failure to maintain lane discipline can also lead to serious crashes.
The region’s mountainous terrain, narrow roads, loose soil, landslides and weather-related road erosion further increase the risk of accidents. Inadequate crash barriers and gaps in traffic regulation enforcement have also been identified as factors contributing to road safety concerns.
The traffic department has deployed special teams in the hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir to monitor traffic violations and help prevent accidents.
