The Char Dham Yatra resumed on Monday morning after remaining suspended for two days due to adverse weather conditions in Uttarakhand, allowing thousands of pilgrims from across India and abroad to resume their journey to the four Himalayan shrines.
Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop lifted the suspension following an improvement in weather conditions and directions from the Char Dham Yatra Control Organisation in Rishikesh. Pilgrims have now been permitted to proceed towards the shrines, while district administrations have been asked to remain vigilant as rainy conditions continue in parts of the region.
The pilgrimage had been suspended on September 26 and 27 following an adverse weather forecast and a red alert issued by the Meteorological Department. Several areas of Uttarakhand received light to heavy rainfall during the period, while snowfall was reported at Hemkund Sahib in Chamoli on Saturday.
The Uttarkashi district administration had also temporarily halted pilgrimage to Gangotri and Yamunotri during the two-day suspension. Pilgrims travelling towards Gangotri were stopped at Heena, while those on the Yamunotri route were halted at Dobata.
Swaroop said the suspension was lifted after weather conditions improved and there were no fresh warnings from the Meteorological Department. He said all district administrations had been directed to implement safety guidelines and facilitate the resumption of the pilgrimage.
However, District Magistrates have been authorised to take decisions based on local conditions. “In the event of road blockages, heavy rainfall, or adverse weather conditions, District Magistrates may temporarily suspend the Yatra at their own level,” Swaroop said.
The administration is continuing to monitor weather conditions and the status of pilgrimage routes. Devotees have been advised to check the latest weather updates and follow instructions issued by local authorities throughout their journey.
