Opposition leaders on Monday criticised Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Parvesh Verma after a video allegedly showing him slapping a young man during a road inspection in west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar went viral, accusing BJP leaders of becoming increasingly unaccountable to voters.
The incident reportedly took place during an inspection of an under-construction road, where questions were raised about the quality of the work. Verma has alleged that an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker abused his family, prompting his reaction. He later said the incident should not have happened.
Congress General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala said BJP leaders had made a practice of insulting people, adding that when power becomes a source of arrogance rather than public service, the need arises to change it.
Earlier, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the incident reflected “the face of a leadership that is not scared of the voters anymore.”
Congress leader Udit Raj backed Gandhi’s remarks, alleging that the deletion of votes through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), misuse of EVMs and changes to electoral procedures had weakened public accountability. He claimed that BJP leaders had taken control of the system and were no longer dependent on voters.
RJD leader Alok Mehta said the incident reflected a lack of sensitivity towards public concerns. He questioned whether people raising criticism or highlighting shortcomings were being treated as enemies, warning that the end of public discourse would undermine democracy.
CPI(M) Secretariat member Ch Babu Rao termed the alleged slapping an expression of arrogance and demanded Verma’s removal from the ministry, saying he had no moral right to continue as Deputy Chief Minister.
BJP leaders defended Verma while condemning violence. BJP MLA Ram Kadam alleged that the youth and others had deliberately provoked the minister by using abusive language against his family. He said criticism of public work was acceptable, but personal abuse was not.
BJP National Spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan said the party opposed all forms of violence and expressed confidence that those involved would clarify the incident. He also criticised the Congress and AAP for commenting on the matter, citing allegations of mistreatment under AAP rule in Punjab.
