Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal on Monday reiterated his party’s allegations of irregularities in the electoral process, claiming that objections raised by two Election Commissioners had substantiated concerns previously expressed by the Congress over the Election Commission’s functioning.
Speaking amid the controversy surrounding the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Venugopal said the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi had been raising concerns about alleged “vote theft” for the past three years.
“This entire episode of the election issue came after the revelation of two Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. Rahul Gandhi and Congress have been raising this issue of vote theft for the last three years. We are clearly telling the truth, with evidence, that the election is totally compromised,” he said.
Venugopal accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of favouring the BJP and alleged that he was not functioning independently.
“Chief Election Commissioner (Gyanesh Kumar) is totally a compromised man. He is working for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is working as a BJP agent; we are making allegations, but that allegation was substantiated by two Election Commissioners nominated by the Narendra Modi government,” Venugopal said.
He questioned the criticism directed at the Congress, arguing that media reports had brought the alleged differences within the poll panel to public attention.
Venugopal further alleged that the Chief Election Commissioner had attempted to undermine the country’s democratic process and illegally take control of the electoral system. He said the Congress had protested over these concerns and claimed that the BJP was now defending Kumar.
Venugopal also asserted that the Chief Election Commissioner had been challenged by fellow members of the Election Commission, adding that the BJP’s support for him demonstrated, in the Congress party’s view, its involvement in the controversy.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also weighed in on the issue on Monday, saying that the “only conspiracy” underway was an alleged attempt to deprive Indian citizens of their democratic and constitutional right to vote. He called for such an alleged effort to be exposed and opposed.
The remarks followed a report in a leading Indian newspaper stating that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised objections at least 14 times over a period of 10 months. According to the report, they had alleged that key decisions were being taken in the name of the full Commission without their knowledge.
Subsequently, Sandhu and Joshi met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the Election Commission of India’s headquarters in New Delhi. A full Commission meeting was also held at Nirvachan Sadan amid reports of differences within the poll panel.
