Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Monday said the BJP’s stand on farmers would be exposed if its leaders refused to join an all-party delegation to New Delhi to seek drought relief from the Centre.
Shivakumar accused the Opposition party of political posturing, saying that leaders demanding compensation for farmers should also approach the Centre and press for financial assistance to the state.
“If the BJP does not come with the all-party delegation to submit a representation to the Centre on the state’s drought situation, it will prove that their stand is nothing but a drama. If the BJP leaders in the state fail to convince the Centre, we will take necessary measures ourselves in the interest of farmers,” he said.
Speaking to the media near his residence in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister said his government would not compromise on the interests of farmers, even if Opposition parties declined to participate in the proposed delegation.
“We will do whatever is necessary to protect the interests of the state’s farmers. Their stand makes it clear that they have no concern for the farmers of the state. Those who are demanding compensation of Rs 25,000 or Rs 50,000 for farmers should also speak to the Centre and ensure that it provides compensation,” Shivakumar said.
He also announced that a Central team would visit Karnataka on October 3 to assess the drought situation. State officials would extend all necessary cooperation to the team in accordance with the law, he added.
Shivakumar said he would soon finalise a date for an all-party meeting to discuss the drought situation and the Kasturirangan report, which has been a significant issue for Karnataka.
He said he would seek appointments with the Prime Minister and concerned Union Ministers to discuss the Kasturirangan report and submit a representation outlining the state’s position.
The Chief Minister also said he would participate in a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, where issues relating to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Chief Election Commissioner were scheduled to be discussed.
Earlier, Shivakumar had announced plans for an all-party meeting to deliberate on key issues, including central drought relief and the Kasturirangan report, amid opposition leaders’ refusal to join the proposed delegation to New Delhi.
He reiterated that the state government would take necessary steps to safeguard farmers’ interests, regardless of the Opposition’s decision on participating in the delegation.
