Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday welcomed Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil’s decision to end his 20-day hunger strike, saying the state government had accepted 12 of his 13 demands.
Fadnavis said the government had engaged with Jarange Patil to resolve the standoff and had urged him to withdraw his fast. He said the remaining demand could not be fulfilled because of legal constraints, which had been communicated to the activist.
“We are glad that Manoj Jarange Patil has called off his hunger strike. We had urged him to do so. Out of his 13 demands, 12 have been accepted by the government. One demand could not be fulfilled due to legal constraints, which was duly communicated to him,” Fadnavis said.
The Chief Minister said the commitments made by the Cabinet sub-committee would be implemented and that the state would undertake the necessary administrative processes and meetings to fulfil them.
Jarange Patil ended his fast after talks with a government delegation at Patoda in Beed district. The delegation included Ministers Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Dadaji Bhuse, MLAs Prasad Lad and Suresh Dhas, and the Beed District Collector.
Following the discussions, Jarange Patil gave the government three months to act on his demands, particularly implementation of the Satara and other relevant gazettes. He warned that he would take the agitation to Mumbai if the government failed to honour its assurances. He also made it clear that suspending the hunger strike did not mean that the wider agitation had ended.
Among the assurances conveyed by the government delegation were implementation of the Satara, Kolhapur, Pune and Aundh Gazettes within three months through a Government Resolution, a revised GR concerning Kunbi certificates in accordance with the Hyderabad Gazette, continued validation of certificates issued under the Hyderabad Gazette and protection of the 58 lakh Kunbi records identified by the Shinde Committee.
The delegation also assured that revoked Kunbi certificates of four elected representatives from Marathwada would be validated, according to the details released following the talks.
Fadnavis thanked Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and legislator Prasad Lad for their role in the discussions. He said the government remained committed to addressing issues concerning the Maratha community and that its doors remained open for dialogue.
The end of the fast has also temporarily halted Jarange Patil’s proposed march towards Mumbai, which had raised concerns because of the ongoing Ganesh festival.
