Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is set to take over as Chairman of the Lohia Trust, replacing his uncle Shivpal Yadav in a significant organisational change that further consolidates his control over key bodies associated with the party’s socialist legacy.
The transition is expected to be smooth, with all eight members of the Trust, including Shivpal Yadav, understood to have consented to Akhilesh taking charge.
Shivpal had headed the Trust for nearly a decade since 2017. The Lohia Trust was established before the formation of the Samajwadi Party and has traditionally focused on promoting socialist ideology and raising funds for the party.
With the latest change, Akhilesh will now head both the Lohia Trust and the Janeshwar Mishra Trust, two organisations closely associated with the propagation of socialist ideas linked to the Samajwadi Party’s founders.
The development assumes added significance against the backdrop of the Yadav family’s political differences that came into the open in 2017. Following the dispute, the late SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav removed Professor Ram Gopal Yadav as Chairman of the Lohia Trust and appointed Shivpal in his place.
Shivpal continued in the position for almost a decade despite differences with Akhilesh on several issues, some of which played out publicly, particularly after Mulayam Singh Yadav’s death.
Akhilesh’s appointment is now being viewed in Uttar Pradesh political circles as another indication of his growing authority over the party’s organisational affairs and institutions linked to its legacy.
By taking charge of both major trusts, the SP chief is expected to exercise greater influence over bodies that carry forward the socialist tradition associated with the party’s founding leadership.
