Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised commuters, including schoolchildren, on Saturday when he boarded a Delhi Metro train and travelled with them to Delhi University, where he was scheduled to address students of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) during its centenary celebrations.
During the roughly 20-minute journey at around 7 p.m., Modi freely shook hands with schoolchildren and interacted with them as well as women passengers travelling in the coach.
Visuals of the journey showed the Prime Minister using a travel card at the Metro station’s ticketing gate before boarding a train on the Yellow Line towards Vishwavidyalaya Metro station.
Modi was seen speaking with students of different age groups. One boy sitting beside him was also seen whispering something into the Prime Minister’s ear before shaking hands with him.
The Metro journey was not Modi’s first. In 2023, he travelled by Delhi Metro to reach Delhi University for the varsity’s centenary celebrations. In 2015, he took the Metro to inaugurate the Faridabad extension line. In February 2026, he travelled on the Meerut Metro and alighted at Meerut South station.
Later, while addressing the SRCC centenary celebrations, Modi highlighted India’s economic growth, rising defence exports and the country’s progress in tackling Naxalism. He also referred to the construction of the new Parliament building and India’s fight against Covid-19.
The Prime Minister said he sets ambitious targets for the country and works hard to achieve them.
Taking aim at what he described as a regressive mentality, Modi again used the term “Dimagi Naxal”, saying people were now seeing the “true colours” of those with an anarchist mentality.
During his address, Modi also recalled prominent alumni of SRCC and described the occasion as historic and significant for India’s education sector.
“I am the sixth player. Today’s occasion is historic. It is also significant for the country’s education sector. Many generations who have been part of SRCC are connected here,” he said.
Paying tribute to SRCC founder, industrialist and philanthropist Sir Shri Ram, Modi said the achievements of an institution that completes 100 years are comparable to an ocean of accomplishments.
“I also thank the college’s founder, Sir Shri Ram ji. When a person lives for 100 years, their experiences are considered to be a sea of riches. And when an institution does so, it becomes an ocean of achievements,” the Prime Minister said.
