Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday accused the Samajwadi Party (SP) government of diverting funds meant for flood relief before 2017, while outlining measures being taken for people affected by flooding in Varanasi.
Adityanath visited Varanasi to distribute relief material among flood-affected residents and also conducted an aerial survey of areas impacted by the floods.
Addressing a gathering, the Chief Minister contrasted the present relief arrangements with those under the previous SP government. He claimed that people affected by floods before 2017 were provided only “dry bread”, rather than hot meals, ration, milk and dignity kits.
“The money sent by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Disaster Relief Fund is being used to make all the arrangements, and is distributed as relief materials,” Adityanath said, alleging that the funds had been taken away during the SP’s tenure before 2017.
“They (Samajwadi Party) used to eat up everyone’s money, including that of the poor,” he alleged.
The Chief Minister said crop damage suffered by farmers due to flooding was being assessed and that affected farmers would receive appropriate compensation. He said relief measures also covered problems caused by insects and reptiles in waterlogged areas, house collapses and deaths caused by lightning strikes.
Adityanath said steps had been taken to provide ₹4 lakh to families of people who die within the specified circumstances, including drowning, lightning strikes or while working in fields, within 24 hours.
He added that if a poor family’s house collapsed, was submerged or was destroyed by fire, immediate sanction would be given for a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana or Chief Minister Awaas Yojana.
Taking another swipe at the previous SP government, Adityanath said a “good government” brings welfare schemes, ends “loots” and works to protect the rights of the poor without discrimination.
“Under the direction of Prime Minister Modi, I have come here to survey the situation in the district,” he said.
The Chief Minister said relief shelters had been established for people displaced by the floods. He added that 48 boats, along with teams of the NDRF, DAC and water police, had been kept on 24-hour standby in affected areas.
Medical camps are also being established to provide treatment to people falling ill amid the flood situation, he said.
