BJP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Saturday met Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, in Samarkand and invited her to attend the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum scheduled to be held in New Delhi in October.
Sharing details of the meeting on X, Chadha said he had the opportunity to meet Narbaeva and personally extend the invitation to the parliamentary forum, which will be hosted by the Indian Parliament under India’s BRICS chairship.
“We spoke about the growing relationship between India and Uzbekistan,” Chadha said, adding that Narbaeva spoke warmly about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Uzbekistan.
According to Chadha, Narbaeva expressed keen interest in attending the BRICS Parliamentary Forum, and India looks forward to welcoming her to New Delhi.
Narbaeva is reportedly the first woman to serve as Chairperson of the Uzbek Senate. She previously served as Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Women’s Committee from 2016 to 2019.
India began its fourth term as BRICS chair this year and is responsible for coordinating the grouping’s activities, hosting meetings and setting its annual agenda.
Chadha is currently in Samarkand as part of the Indian parliamentary delegation to the 12th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, being held from September 4 to 6.
Earlier, Chadha said he had been selected to represent Parliament at the three-day conference after being nominated by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan.
The IPU, founded in 1889 and headquartered in Geneva, comprises 180 member parliaments and 15 associate members. The theme of this year’s conference is “Reclaiming human rights, justice and dignity for all in turbulent times”.
Young parliamentarians from around the world are discussing issues including youth rights in conflict situations, digital rights and online safety, climate resilience and justice, and economic opportunities for young people.
Chadha said India, as the world’s largest democracy with one of the world’s youngest populations, has an important contribution to make to these discussions while also learning from other countries.
He also said the Indian delegation’s participation would help carry forward the momentum in India-Uzbekistan parliamentary ties following Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Uzbekistan.
