Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has revealed that Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman originally created the song “Masakali” for her 2007 film Om Shanti Om, before the track eventually became part of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi-6.
Farah made the revelation during a recent visit to music director Vishal Dadlani’s farmhouse for her YouTube vlog. While discussing their long professional association, she recalled approaching Rahman to compose the music for Om Shanti Om before Vishal-Shekhar eventually came on board.
Farah said she had told Vishal that she planned to approach Rahman and, if the collaboration did not work out, would then consider working with Vishal and Shekhar.
“The first song which Rahman made for Om Shanti Om was Masakali! I don’t know where I was going to put it but I love that song and love that word,” Farah recalled during the vlog.
Vishal said he had hoped the collaboration between Farah and Rahman would materialise and suggested that he and Shekhar could assist Rahman on the project.
He also joked that even if he and Shekhar had not ended up working on Om Shanti Om, the film would still have had great music.
Farah, however, credited the duo for making the film’s music “epic”.
Vishal recalled the scale and style of the musical, describing Om Shanti Om as an example of traditional, large-scale Bollywood “masala” music.
“The big, masala music that was in ‘Om Shanti Om’, is the only one. This is the last one! The traditional masala Bollywood musical is this one,” he said.
He also recalled how viewers continue to discuss the film’s elaborate visuals and choreography, including how sequences such as “Dhoom Taana” were created at a time when artificial intelligence was not part of filmmaking.
“Masakali” was eventually featured in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s 2009 film Delhi-6, which starred Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor.
