The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Women’s Wing on Saturday staged a district-level protest outside the SDM office in Samrala over the alleged assault and humiliation of an elderly Dalit woman at a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) office.
Thousands of women participated in the demonstration, which was led by AAP Punjab Women’s Wing president and Moga MLA Dr. Amandeep Kaur Arora. Ludhiana Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur and several other women leaders also joined the protest.
The demonstrators raised slogans against the Badal family and those allegedly involved in the incident. They also burnt an effigy of SAD leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and criticised him and Harsimrat Kaur Badal for what they described as silence over the matter.
Addressing the protesters, Dr. Amandeep Kaur Arora said the alleged assault was particularly disturbing as the woman had reportedly referred to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann as being like her son.
“The woman reportedly said only one thing, that Bhagwant Singh Mann is like her son. She was allegedly told that the office belonged to the Badals and that she would be beaten if she took Bhagwant Singh Mann’s name there. This is an extremely shameful attitude,” she said.
Arora questioned the alleged decision to assault the woman inside a political office, saying no individual or organisation had the right to take the law into its own hands.
She said any disagreement with the woman should have been taken to the police instead of allegedly calling her into an office and assaulting her.
The AAP MLA also linked the alleged incident to political tensions involving the Badal family, claiming that the episode reflected their “fear and frustration” over Bhagwant Mann’s name.
She accused the SAD and Congress of having relied on divisive politics and said Punjab’s people had rejected such politics.
“The AAP Women’s Wing stands firmly with every woman of Punjab. No woman should be assaulted, threatened or humiliated. We demand a fair and impartial investigation and the strictest possible action against whoever is found responsible,” Arora said.
She also urged the Commissioner of Police, SSP and Additional Deputy Commissioner concerned to ensure a fair investigation and appropriate legal action against anyone found guilty.
