A case has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra under non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), West Bengal Police said on Thursday.
The Krishnanagar MP has been summoned to appear before the Diamond Harbour Cyber Crime Police Station in South 24 Parganas district at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 5.
According to police, the case has been registered under Sections 196, 197, 299 and 353 of the BNS. The provisions relate, respectively, to promoting enmity between different groups, acts or statements prejudicial to national integration and public harmony, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and circulation of false statements, rumours or reports that may lead to public mischief.
The case stems from a social media post shared by Moitra on September 1 in which she named several senior IPS and IAS officers. Moitra had alleged that Muslim officers were deliberately excluded from Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s programme in North Bengal.
She specifically named Siliguri Police Commissioner Waquar Raja, STF Director General Javed Shamim and IAS officer Khalil Ahmed, claiming that minority bureaucrats and police officers had been intentionally left out of the event.
A complaint was subsequently filed at the Diamond Harbour Cyber Crime Police Station, alleging that Moitra’s post was intended to incite communal hatred. Based on the complaint, police summoned her for questioning. Moitra has not publicly responded to the latest case so far.
Earlier, the TMC MP had appeared at Hogalbari Police Station in Nadia district in connection with another case involving similar allegations of promoting communal hatred. Police questioned her for more than an hour.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the West Bengal Police to provide adequate armed security to Moitra after eggs were allegedly thrown at her during a recent visit to her Krishnanagar constituency.
