The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigation into alleged irregularities in Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruitment has reportedly revealed that arrested IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar was receiving minute-by-minute inputs from influential persons and was allegedly advised on how to evade the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe, officials said on Thursday.
According to the investigation, Kumar allegedly left Bengaluru after the ED conducted raids at the residence of KPSC Chairman Shivashankarappa Sahukar and the KPSC office. Suspecting that he could be the next target, he reportedly flew from Bengaluru to Delhi.
The investigation further indicated that Kumar travelled to Noida, where he booked a room and met a female friend. While he was there, he allegedly received a call from an influential person warning him that the ED could conduct a raid at any time and that his alleged role in the case had come to light. He was reportedly advised to leave immediately, leading to a quarrel with his female friend.
Kumar subsequently returned to Delhi, where he allegedly called three friends to his room before travelling with them to Sri Lanka, where they stayed for two days.
After reportedly learning that a lookout notice could be issued against him, Kumar returned to Chennai and later reached Bengaluru. He then stayed at a resort in Devanahalli, near Kempegowda International Airport.
The CID investigation has reportedly found that influential persons advised Kumar not to respond to an ED notice and instead appear before the CID for questioning. He followed the advice and appeared before the CID. After questioning on the second day, he reportedly left the office but returned after receiving a phone call.
According to investigators, the caller allegedly told him that ED officials were waiting at his residence. Kumar was subsequently arrested by the CID in the early hours of Thursday.
Meanwhile, a purported video showing Kumar dancing and partying with men and women has gone viral on social media. Its authenticity and context have not been independently established.
The CID has also reportedly found that Kumar had applied for leave, citing his father’s heart surgery as the reason.
The investigation has meanwhile intensified against BJP leader and alleged middleman Basavaraj Kannale, who is suspected of having connections at the state and national levels and reportedly maintains contact with several politicians.
A CID team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Geetha took Kannale to his Bengaluru residence on Thursday as part of the investigation. Investigators are reportedly conducting a mahazar at the residence while gathering further evidence in the alleged KPSC recruitment scam.
The CID is examining the alleged network of middlemen and influential persons involved in the recruitment process, along with suspected links between officials, political figures and others connected to the case.
