Ahmedabad is set to host the Hyundai World Archery Para Series for the first time, with more than 100 athletes from 20 countries competing at the Sabarmati Riverfront from September 5 to 9.
The event will mark the third stage of the 2026 Hyundai World Archery Para Series, following the opening stage in Bangkok in April and the second stage in Nove Mesto, Czechia, held from June 30 to July 4. The fourth and final stage is scheduled to take place in Santiago, Chile, in October.
Organised by the Archery Association of India (AAI) with support from the Gujarat government, Sports Authority of Gujarat and Sports Authority of India, the tournament will feature events across the Recurve Open, Compound Open, W1 and Visually Impaired categories.
The participating nations include India, China, Great Britain, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Slovakia, the US, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cyprus, Czechia, Iraq, Russia and Sri Lanka.
India will field a 29-member squad, including Paris 2024 Paralympic champion Harvinder Singh, world para-archery champion and Paralympic medallist Sheetal Devi, Arjuna Awardee and World Para Archery medallist Rakesh Kumar, and Paralympian Shyam Sunder Swami. The team has been preparing at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar, with 11 archers also selected for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the event would provide Indian and international para-athletes with a platform to compete at the highest level while showcasing the state’s growing sporting infrastructure.
The tournament’s opening ceremony, themed “every arrow tells a story of courage”, will celebrate the determination and resilience of para-athletes. The event will be formally inaugurated on September 4.
AAI President Arjun Munda said hosting the series would give Indian archers an opportunity to compete against leading international athletes on home soil and inspire a new generation of para-athletes.
AAI Secretary General Virendra Sachdeva described the event as a significant milestone for the sport, saying it would bring athletes, coaches and the international archery community together in India and contribute to the development of the country’s para-archery ecosystem.
