Singer Akriti Kakar has joined forces with Dr. Palash Sen for her new independent single ‘Oh Jaanu’, a retro-inspired track that celebrates the vibrant sounds, personalities and visual culture associated with the disco era.
Drawing from the pop, funk and disco influences of 1970s and 1980s Bollywood, the song has been composed by Suvam Moitra and written by Geet Sagar. The track also pays tribute to several iconic Bollywood and Hollywood personalities and characters.
Akriti said she wanted the song to take listeners on an emotional and musical journey while recreating the spirit of a bygone era.
“I believe music should make you feel different emotions! This song’s intention is exactly that — a bit of time travel to the fun disco era, celebrating icons who we have revered across decades,” she said.
The singer also said she does not want to restrict her independent music to a single genre, despite the industry’s emphasis on developing a distinct musical identity.
“Sonically and visually, every time I create an independent song, I feel I need to make something different from the last one I made. Even though industry geniuses would say every independent artist needs to define themselves with one particular genre, I don’t believe in that. My voice is the genre,” Akriti said.
The music video takes the retro theme further, with Akriti and Palash appearing in several memorable avatars, including Marilyn Monroe, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Basanti, Mastani and Manjulika.
Akriti said the concept fulfilled a long-standing desire to create a Hollywood-Bollywood costume party on screen.
“Secretly, I’ve always wanted to do a Hollywood-Bollywood costume party forever! Imagine getting to do a whole music video doing just that lottery, I would say! I hope people don’t compare because we won’t even come close, but it’s done from a place of love, and we dressed up to pay tribute and respect to all these icons,” she said.
Describing the shoot as demanding but enjoyable, Akriti said portraying multiple characters one after another was challenging, while praising her team for executing the concept efficiently.
“It was insanely hard to do all these characters one after the other, but my team was beyond efficient and we nailed it alongside having too much fun,” she said.
She also singled out Palash Sen’s transformations as one of the highlights of the project, calling him a “Sheer icon himself!”
