Nepal-Tibet flash floods: Sadhguru seeks access to Gyirong, says 80-member group unaccounted for

Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev has appealed to authorities for permission to travel to flood-hit Gyirong in Tibet to help search for an 80-member group associated with the Isha Foundation that was caught in a devastating flash flood near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Sadhguru, who is currently in Saga, Tibet, said communication networks and roads in the affected area were disrupted, leaving the whereabouts of the group unconfirmed. Recent reports said 77 pilgrims from the group were unaccounted for, along with three volunteers.

According to Sadhguru, the group comprised participants from several countries, including 22 from the United States, 12 from Canada, 11 from Australia, nine from the United Kingdom and four from Germany. The group had 34 men and 46 women, besides volunteers and a doctor.

He said the group leader, Ishanga Praveen, sent a message at 9.05 a.m. saying that the group had reached the immigration centre. The disaster struck around 9.14 a.m., and there has been no subsequent confirmation of the group’s safety.

Sadhguru said the group was believed to have been inside the immigration building when the flood struck. He described the destruction in Gyirong as extensive, saying the immigration building and parts of the town had been swept away.

The spiritual leader said embassies of countries whose citizens were part of the group had been informed about the situation. He also said efforts were being made through the Indian, Chinese and US diplomatic channels to obtain permission to reach Gyirong.

“We, along with the families, beseech you to kindly allow us (myself and a few volunteers) to be at Gyirong,” Sadhguru said, adding that their intention was to support rescue efforts without obstructing authorities.

The flash floods have caused widespread devastation on both sides of the Nepal-Tibet border. Hundreds of people remain unaccounted for, while rescue and relief operations are continuing amid severe damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
