Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked President Droupadi Murmu for her Independence Day greetings to the people of Ukraine and reaffirmed Kyiv’s commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial ties with India.
Zelensky’s remarks came after President Murmu conveyed her greetings to Ukraine on the occasion of its 35th Independence Day. Ukraine marked the anniversary on August 24.
“I was glad to receive felicitations for the people of Ukraine from the President of India. Thank you for the wishes of peace,” Zelensky said in a social media post.
He described a dignified end to Russia’s war as the “most cherished dream” of millions of Ukrainians and said the international community should work together to help create a path towards peace.
“I also reaffirm Ukraine’s commitment to further building a mutually beneficial dialogue with India,” Zelensky added.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also thanked External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for his Independence Day message and expressed hope for further strengthening of India-Ukraine relations.
India’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Anjani Kumar, attended the official Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv and conveyed India’s greetings to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Embassy in New Delhi also organised an Independence Day event attended by Charge d’Affaires Artem Nosko and representatives of the Ukrainian community in India.
The embassy said Nosko reflected on Ukraine’s history, its long struggle for freedom and its determination to defend its right to exist and determine its own future. Community representative Maryna Akram also read a poem dedicated to Ukraine, home and the enduring bond between people and their country.
The diplomatic exchanges come as Ukraine continues to seek international support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Russia, while maintaining efforts to deepen relations with countries including India.
