Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Tuesday called off his hunger strike after his health deteriorated, with party leaders expressing concern over a drop in his blood pressure.
Rao had begun a 48-hour hunger strike on Monday demanding that the Telangana government clear pending fee reimbursement dues. Senior party leaders advised him to end the protest after his condition caused concern among BJP workers.
BJP national leader and MP K. Laxman offered lemon juice to Rao, formally ending the fast.
Former Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, MP Eatala Rajender, Telangana Assembly BJP floor leader Maheshwar Reddy, party MLAs and other leaders had earlier joined the protest and expressed solidarity with Rao.
Rajender criticised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy over the pending fee reimbursement payments and urged him to consider the impact of the issue on students and their future.
Before ending his fast, Rao posted on X that he was beginning the second day of his protest for Telangana’s students. He alleged that nearly 40 lakh students were suffering because of the government’s failure to clear fee reimbursement dues, affecting their ability to pursue higher education and secure employment.
The BJP state chief claimed that pending fee reimbursement dues amounted to nearly Rs 15,000 crore and alleged that the Congress government had failed to fulfil major commitments made to students and young people.
Rao further accused the government of pushing the state’s education system into a crisis, saying uncertainty over education and employment was affecting lakhs of students. He warned that the government’s alleged failure to address their concerns would have political consequences.
The BJP leader had also criticised the Congress government’s recent efforts to project itself as a champion of youth interests, calling the claims misleading and alleging that students and young people had been “deceived” by the government.
