A six-year-old student of a private school in Visakhapatnam died on Thursday after he was allegedly slapped by a teacher over incomplete homework, triggering outrage among his family and the local community.
The child, identified as Pranay Tej, a UKG student, reportedly collapsed shortly after the incident at Little Garden School in the One Town area. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced on social media. The video purportedly shows the boy standing in a queue while the teacher checked students’ homework. The teacher is seen pulling him closer as he cries and pleads not to be beaten before allegedly slapping him. The child then collapses onto the teacher.
According to officials, the teacher alerted other school staff following the incident, and attempts were made to revive the child through CPR. He was subsequently taken to hospital.
The exact cause of death is yet to be established. Officials said the child was suspected to have suffered a cardiac arrest following the incident, but the cause would be determined only after a detailed investigation and post-mortem examination.
The body was shifted to King George Hospital (KGH) for post-mortem. Family members gathered at the hospital and staged a protest, demanding stringent action against those responsible.
Andhra Pradesh Education Minister Nara Lokesh expressed grief over the child’s death and said legal action would be taken against the teacher and school management.
“It is heartbreaking that six-year-old Pranay Tej lost his life due to a teacher beating him,” Lokesh said in a post on X, while conveying his condolences to the child’s parents and assuring them of government support.
Pranay’s parents alleged that their son was healthy and active when he left for school that morning. They said the family had returned from a pilgrimage to Tirupati only on Wednesday, because of which the child could not complete his homework.
The family also alleged that the school management did not inform them about the incident. Calling for the case to be treated as murder, they demanded strict action against the teacher and school authorities.
