Sahith Theegala faces a crucial week at the 2026 BMW Championship, knowing he will likely need a high finish at Bellerive Country Club to move into the top 30 of the FedExCup standings and earn a place in the season-ending TOUR Championship.
The BMW Championship, being played from August 20 to 23, features the remaining 50 players in the FedExCup Playoffs. Only the top 30 after this week’s tournament will advance to East Lake, where the FedExCup champion will be crowned.
Bellerive is a demanding par-70 course measuring 7,448 yards, with more than 70 bunkers and a premium on accurate ball-striking and long-iron play. With no halfway cut, all 50 competitors are guaranteed four rounds to improve their positions in the standings. The tournament carries a $20 million purse.
Theegala enters the BMW Championship ranked No. 46 in the FedExCup standings. Although his top-50 finish has secured his place in next season’s $20 million Signature Events, he needs a significantly stronger result to continue his playoff campaign. A finish around the top three could give him a realistic opportunity to break into the top 30.
Theegala, who will begin his tournament alongside Justin Thomas, will need a strong performance over the four rounds to keep alive his hopes of competing for the season’s biggest prize at East Lake.
Among the Indian-origin players in the field, Akshay Bhatia is comfortably positioned. The three-time PGA Tour winner is 15th in the FedExCup standings and has effectively secured his TOUR Championship berth. Bhatia, who won the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this season, will tee off alongside Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama.
Aaron Rai, meanwhile, occupies 37th position and faces a more challenging path to the top 30. The English-Indian golfer, who won the PGA Championship earlier this year, needs a strong showing at Bellerive and will play alongside Ben Griffin.
The 2026 playoffs have already marked a significant season for Indian-origin golf, with four players advancing through the regular season and three making the 50-player BMW Championship field. Bhatia, Theegala and Rai have all secured starts in next year’s Signature Events, while Rai’s major victory has guaranteed him entry into all four major championships.
Indo-Canadian rookie Sudarshan Yellamaraju narrowly missed the BMW Championship after finishing 58th in the final points standings. He impressed during the opening playoff events, including spending time inside the top 10, but could not finish inside the required top 50.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler enters as the favourite after an emphatic eight-shot victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Rory McIlroy, Rai and Xander Schauffele are among those expected to challenge him.
The battle for the final TOUR Championship places, however, could provide the week’s biggest drama. Rickie Fowler, Kurt Kitayama and Gary Woodland are separated by only a handful of points, while Adam Scott, Sungjae Im and Viktor Hovland are also fighting to keep their seasons alive.
For Theegala, the equation is straightforward: he needs a major performance at Bellerive. A finish near the top could keep his FedExCup hopes alive, while a lower placing is likely to end his playoff campaign.
