A Delhi court on Wednesday sent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain to judicial custody in a case concerning alleged irregularities in the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Jain was among six people arrested by the Delhi government’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) on Tuesday in an alleged corruption and tender-manipulation case linked to the augmentation and upgradation of sewage treatment plants (STPs) under the DJB.
Former DJB CEO and IAS officer Udit Prakash Rai was also arrested in the case. The other accused are Ankit Srivastava, a former contractual consultant with the DJB; Nagendra Yadav, proprietor of M/s AN Enterprises; Raja Kumar Kurra, owner of M/s Euroteck Environment Private Limited; and Pankaj Verma, proprietor of M/s Srijanhar.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts passed the custody orders after the accused were produced before the court.
The court rejected Jain’s plea challenging the legality of his arrest. His bail application will be heard on August 25.
Ankit Srivastava has been remanded to two days’ ACB custody, while the other accused have been sent to judicial custody.
The case stems from an FIR registered at the ACB police station on May 11, 2024, following a complaint by the Delhi government’s Directorate of Vigilance. The FIR invokes Sections 7, 7A, 9 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018, along with Sections 420, 409, 418 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code.
According to the ACB, the investigation concerns alleged large-scale irregularities, manipulation of tender conditions and criminal conspiracy in the award of contracts for DJB sewage treatment plant projects.
The agency has alleged that the tendering process contained restrictive technical specifications and conditions that favoured a particular technology provider, M/s Euroteck Environment Private Limited.
