Music composer Amaal Mallik has opened up about his working relationship with playback singers Armaan Malik and Arijit Singh, saying their equation allows him to be candid about their vocal performances and make decisions based on what works best for a song.
Amaal, who composed ‘Yeh Awarapan’ for the recently released Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Awarapan 2’, spoke to IANS during the film’s promotions in Mumbai’s BKC area.
The composer said he shares a comfortable professional equation with both singers and can openly suggest that they try a song before deciding who is best suited to record the final version.
“With Armaan and Arijit, I have a relationship. I always tell both of them, ‘Armaan or Arijit will sing this song. I want you also to try, and let’s see who does the best job.’ So, that relationship is there,” he said.
Amaal also highlighted the importance of hands-on experience in shaping a singer’s craft. He pointed to Arijit’s extensive work on demos and Armaan’s experience assisting established singers such as Sonu Nigam and the late KK during recording sessions.
“Like Arijit will sing so many demos that he became Arijit Singh. Armaan has also assisted a lot in Sonu Nigam’s recordings, KK’s recordings,” Amaal said.
He added that Armaan had also recorded Arijit on several songs, describing such experiences as valuable learning opportunities for singers.
“A singer learns from all these things,” he said.
Amaal’s comments come amid a broader discussion in the music industry about the growing use of artificial intelligence for scratch vocals and whether it could reduce opportunities for emerging singers to gain practical recording experience.
‘Awarapan 2’ is the sequel to the 2007 film ‘Awarapan’, with Emraan Hashmi reprising his role as Shivam Pandit. Although the original film did not perform strongly at the box office on release, it developed a loyal following over the years and attained cult status, particularly for its music and Hashmi’s performance.
‘Awarapan 2’ is currently playing in cinemas.
