West Bengal Congress Observes ‘Black Day’ Over Murder of Party Leader, Son in Nadia

Kolkata, August 16, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) observed a ‘black day’ across the state on Sunday in protest against the killing of Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his 24-year-old son Abu Sufian in Nadia district.

The father-son duo were allegedly attacked late Saturday night at Bethuadahari under Nakashipara Police Station while returning home in a four-wheeler. According to sources, unidentified assailants blocked their vehicle, opened fire and then attacked the two men with sharp weapons.

Both Anisur Rahman and Abu Sufian reportedly died at the spot from excessive blood loss. Police personnel from Nakashipara Police Station reached the scene after being alerted about the incident.

Former West Bengal Congress president and five-time Lok Sabha member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury condemned the killings and called for an impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

In a social media post, Chowdhury said the incident on Independence Day raised questions about the safety of people and their freedom to participate in political activities, despite the BJP-led state government’s slogan of “Fear Out, Trust In”. He also said the Congress leadership stood with the bereaved family.

WBPCC president Subhankar Sarkar said the party would continue to oppose attempts to silence minorities and opposition voices in West Bengal.

“Congress leadership is with the bereaved family in this difficult time,” Chowdhury said.

Local Congress workers alleged that the attack was carried out at the direction of jailed Trinamool Congress leader Jubbar Sheikh. Congress leader Tipu Sultan claimed Sheikh had allegedly used people outside the jail to facilitate the incident and demanded exemplary punishment if the allegation was established through investigation.

Surajit Kumar Dey, Additional Superintendent (Rural) of Krishnanagar Police District, said a detailed investigation was underway. He declined to provide further details at this stage.
