Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday extended his greetings to India on its 80th Independence Day, praising the country’s remarkable progress, global stature and economic potential while highlighting the deepening partnership between Australia and India.
In a statement marking the occasion, Albanese said India’s journey to freedom had been difficult but was driven by “will, belief and determination”, laying the foundation for a new era of hope.
He said India had continued to make significant progress over the eight decades since Independence.
“Today, as the world’s largest democracy and fastest growing major economy, India fills us with awe at the scale of its achievements and the vastness of its potential,” Albanese said.
The Australian Prime Minister also highlighted the significance of Independence Day for the Indian-Australian community, saying people of Indian heritage in Australia would reflect on the country’s eight-decade journey with pride while looking ahead to its future.
He pointed to strong economic and strategic ties between Australia and India and acknowledged the contribution of the Indian-Australian community to strengthening relations between the two countries.
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia last month, Albanese said the bilateral relationship had become increasingly important.
“As I said to my friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit, our relationship has never been more consequential,” he said, referring to the enthusiastic reception Modi received during the visit.
Albanese said Australia and India were looking to expand cooperation into new and growing areas, with the Indian-Australian community serving as an important link between the two countries.
He joined Indians in celebrating the country’s history, culture, diversity and achievements, while expressing confidence in the potential of the shared future between Australia and India.
During his Australia visit last month, Modi had also said the outcomes of his trip had strengthened bilateral ties and opened new avenues of cooperation across various sectors.
“As my Australia visit concludes, I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Australia as well as to PM Albanese for their warmth,” Modi had posted on X, saying the momentum generated by the visit would benefit India and the world.
