Punjab Ministers Harpal Cheema, Tarunpreet Sond Pay Tribute to Shaheed Karnail Singh Issru in Native Village

Khanna, August 15, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab Cabinet Ministers Harpal Singh Cheema and Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Saturday paid floral tributes to Shaheed Master Karnail Singh Issru at a state-level function held in his native village, Issru, on his martyrdom day. The freedom fighter was martyred while participating in the struggle to liberate Goa from Portuguese rule.

The ministers laid wreaths at the statue of Shaheed Karnail Singh Issru and honoured his nieces, Jaswinder Kaur and Narinder Kaur.

Cheema said Punjabis had consistently made sacrifices for the unity, integrity and peace of the country. He said Karnail Singh Issru’s contribution to the liberation of Goa reflected Punjab’s tradition of courage and patriotism.

Highlighting the Punjab government’s initiatives, Cheema said the people gave the Aam Aadmi Party a historic mandate in 2022, following which the government was formed under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. He said the government had fulfilled its five guarantees.

He claimed that the provision of up to 300 units of free electricity had resulted in nearly 90 per cent of households receiving zero electricity bills. He also cited Schools of Eminence, international-level teacher training and improved government school results as indicators of change in education.

Cheema said the government had provided ₹1 crore ex-gratia assistance to families of martyrs, free treatment under its health insurance scheme, road development, sports infrastructure, increased employment opportunities and 70,000 government jobs. He added that strict action against drugs and gangsterism was continuing, alongside efforts to engage youth in sports and employment.

Sond said the legacy of sacrifice associated with the Sikh Gurus, particularly Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, had inspired Punjabis to stand for humanity and truth. He said the same spirit had contributed significantly to Punjab’s role in India’s freedom struggle.

Remembering Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Udham Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Lala Lajpat Rai and Shaheed Karnail Singh Issru, Sond urged the younger generation to draw inspiration from their lives and sacrifices.

Sond said the Mann government had undertaken initiatives in health, education and agriculture, including Aam Aadmi Clinics, Schools of Eminence, cashless healthcare coverage of up to ₹10 lakh and expansion of canal irrigation.

He said ₹2.17 crore had so far been released for the overall development of Issru village. The funds are being used for projects including sports grounds, an Anganwadi centre, a rural library, pond cleaning, a Panchayat Ghar and an SC Dharamshala. Sond assured that there would be no shortage of funds for the development of the martyr’s native village.

Among those present at the event were Punjab Genco Limited Chairman Navjot Singh Jarg, District Parishad Ludhiana Chairman Jagroop Singh Seh, Market Committee Doraha Chairman and District President Rural Gurdarshan Singh Koohli, Block Samiti Khanna Chairman Lakhvir Singh Gill, Municipal Council Khanna President Jatinder Pathak, District Parishad member Master Avtar Singh Daihru, Khanna SSP Dr Darpan Ahluwalia, ADC Jashanpreet Kaur Gill, SDM Swati Tiwana, Executive Officer Charanjit Singh, Naib Tehsildar Gurcharan Singh, BDPO Satwinder Singh Kang and Issru Sarpanch Jatinderjot Singh, besides officials from various departments and Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers.
