Three sisters, including a one-year-old child, died after allegedly suffering electric shocks from a cooler at their home in Rajasthan’s Baran district on Saturday, police said.
The incident took place while the girls’ parents and other family members were away working as farm labourers. The deceased were identified as seven-year-old Saloni, three-year-old Avantika and one-year-old Sandhya.
According to preliminary information, the children came into contact with an electrically charged cooler at the house where the family was staying. Police suspect that a fault in the appliance may have caused the cooler to become electrically charged.
Sadar police station officer Naval Kishore Meena said the girls’ father, Madanlal Sahariya, is originally from Karnavta village under Sirsi police station in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district. He had been working as a farm labourer for a farmer in Fatehpur and was living with his family at the farm.
The exact sequence of events remains under investigation.
When the family returned from work, they found the three children unresponsive. Local residents rushed to the spot and helped take the girls to a hospital.
Police and administrative officials reached the hospital after being informed about the incident. Doctors examined the children and declared all three dead.
Baran Sub-Divisional Officer Ramavatar Meena said the administration reached the hospital following the deaths. Postmortems were conducted on all three bodies before they were handed over to the family. Arrangements were subsequently made to transport the bodies to their native village.
The incident has left the family devastated and triggered grief in the area.
The administration has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the electrocution. Police are also investigating the suspected electrical fault and the sequence of events that led to the deaths.
The Sub-Divisional Officer said the government would extend all possible assistance to the affected family in accordance with applicable rules.
