Lovely Professional University (LPU) celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with a campus-wide tribute to the country’s freedom fighters and armed forces, combining patriotic performances with a call to the youth to contribute to India’s economic progress.
The celebrations began with the unfurling of the National Flag by LPU Founder Chancellor and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal. The ceremony featured a ceremonial march, live band performance and an NCC Guard of Honour, followed by the National Anthem.
Addressing students, Dr Mittal called for economic independence to become the next major national mission for India’s youth. He urged students to earn while pursuing their education, contribute towards their own educational expenses and aim to graduate with both a degree and a career.
“Political freedom made us a nation; economic strength will make us a global power,” Dr Mittal said, urging students to become financially independent and contribute to their families as well as the country’s economy. He described this youth-led pursuit of economic self-reliance as “our Inquilab” and said financially empowered young people would become the flag bearers of Viksit Bharat.
Dr Mittal also described Vande Mataram as more than a patriotic song, saying its ideals should inspire young people to contribute towards building a developed India.
The celebrations continued with cultural presentations highlighting India’s unity in diversity and rich heritage. Students presented a soulful rendition of Vande Mataram, along with patriotic performances, recitations and artistic programmes.
A major highlight was a theatrical presentation based on the life and sacrifice of Shaheed Sardar Udham Singh. The performance portrayed his courage and commitment to justice while reminding the audience of the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle.
The university said the celebrations sought to connect the legacy of independence with the responsibilities of the present generation, particularly values of integrity, courage, unity and collective action. The Har Ghar Tiranga spirit was also reflected across the campus, which was decorated in the colours of the National Flag.
