Police on Sunday arrested three people, including a Trinamool Congress-linked village panchayat chief, in connection with the killing of Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his 24-year-old son Abu Sufian in West Bengal’s Nadia district.
Fatema Bibi, head of the Haranagar village panchayat, was among those arrested in connection with the killings at Bethuadahari under Nakashipara Police Station late Saturday night. Her husband, Jubbar Sheikh, an influential Trinamool Congress leader in the area, is currently in judicial custody.
Local Congress leaders have accused Sheikh of being the alleged mastermind behind the killings. The allegations have not been independently established.
Police also arrested Fatema Bibi’s associates Ali Mandal and Mithun Sheikh. All three were produced before a court after undergoing medical examinations, and police sought their custody for further investigation.
According to preliminary information, Anisur Rahman and Abu Sufian were returning home in a four-wheeler when assailants allegedly blocked their vehicle and opened fire. The attackers then reportedly forced the father and son out of the vehicle and assaulted them with sharp weapons.
Both men died at the spot, reportedly from excessive blood loss. Police from Nakashipara reached the scene after receiving information about the attack.
The arrests have come amid heightened political tensions in the district. Nadia Congress leaders claimed that the party had been regaining ground as a principal Opposition force following the Trinamool Congress’ defeat in the recently concluded Assembly polls.
A local Congress leader alleged that Rahman and his son were playing an important role in rebuilding the party’s organisation in the area and claimed that this had made them targets of local Trinamool leaders.
“It was not just a simple murder. The assassin rather wanted to leave a message through the ghastly manner in which the father and his son were killed,” the Congress leader said.
The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee observed a statewide ‘black day’ on Sunday to protest the killings.
Both current state Congress president Suvankar Sarkar and former state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have demanded a speedy investigation and the strictest punishment for those found responsible.
