Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Singh Rouri on Saturday hoisted the National Flag at the district-level Independence Day समारोह in Tarn Taran and called upon people to work towards building the India envisioned by the freedom fighters and martyrs.
The 80th Independence Day was celebrated at the Police Lines Ground in Tarn Taran with patriotic fervour. After unfurling the Tricolour, Roure inspected the parade and took the salute from the marching contingents. Deputy Commissioner Rahul and SSP Surinder Lamba accompanied him during the ceremony. Khadoor Sahib MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura, Khemkaran MLA Sarwan Singh Dhun and members of the Deputy Speaker’s family were also present.
The parade, commanded by DSP Parvesh Kumar, featured contingents of the Punjab Police, Punjab Home Guards, NCC cadets and NSS Girl Guides. Police and school bands added to the ceremonial atmosphere.
Students from various schools presented a PT show, Shabad Kirtan, group songs and patriotic performances. Giddha and Bhangra performances also drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Addressing the gathering, Rouri said he considered himself fortunate to have unfurled the National Flag in Tarn Taran, the holy city founded by the Fifth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Extending Independence Day greetings to residents and Punjabis living across the world, he said the country had attained freedom through the sacrifices made by its patriots and freedom fighters.
Rouri said it was the collective responsibility of citizens to follow the ideals and principles of the martyrs and work towards creating the nation they had envisioned. He also highlighted the policies and welfare initiatives of the Punjab Government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, including measures for honouring martyrs, the sports policy, employment generation, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, the anti-drug campaign, education, free electricity, the Mukh Mantri Tirath Yatra Scheme and the Mawan-Dhian Satkar Yojana.
The Deputy Speaker also spoke about achievements of Tarn Taran district in various fields.
During the function, tricycles and sewing machines were distributed among needy beneficiaries. Freedom fighters and families of martyred soldiers were honoured, along with individuals, officials and employees who had made notable contributions and achieved distinction in different fields.
District coordinators, Assembly coordinators and Vice Assembly coordinators associated with the Nasha Mukti Morcha constituted under the government’s anti-drug campaign were also specially honoured.
Chairpersons and other prominent personalities associated with Tarn Taran were felicitated by the chief guest. The honourees included Ranjit Singh Cheema, Gurdev Singh Lakhna, Gurwinder Singh Behlwar, Rajinder Singh Usma, Angad Deep Singh Sohal, Navjot Kaur Hundal, Gursewak Singh Aulakh and Rupinder Kaur, among others.
The event was attended by IG Pradeep Kumar Yadav, District and Sessions Judge Kanwaljit Singh Bajwa, ADC (General) Dr Aditya Sharma, ADC (Development) Sanjeev Kumar, SDM Tarn Taran Dr Karnveer Singh, SP Sukhninder Singh, DSP Jaspal Singh, Tehsildars Archana and Ratnajit Khullar, District Education Officer Rajiv Kumar Chhabra, Civil Surgeon Dr Sandeep Dhawan, District Development and Panchayat Officer Devinder Singh, Deputy District Education Officer Rajinder Kaur, Red Cross Secretary Sarabjit Singh Thind, lecturer Kulwinder Singh, besides officers and employees of various departments, teachers, students and prominent residents.
