Two people were killed and two others remained missing after a car carrying five people plunged into a canal in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district late Saturday night, police said.
The accident occurred near Itempudi in Iragavaram mandal when the car lost control and fell into the Narsapuram canal. Four occupants were initially reported missing, while one person managed to escape.
Police, divers and firefighting personnel launched a rescue operation soon after the incident. The bodies of Pothula Lakshmi Bhanu (18) and D. Nagi Reddy (18) were recovered from the canal on Sunday morning and sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.
The other two missing persons were identified as Rajaram (17) and Sai Surya (19). The search for them was continuing. Rescue personnel also retrieved the car from the canal.
According to police, the group was travelling to Mori village in East Godavari district to meet a friend after attending another friend’s wedding at Peravali village. The area was witnessing rainfall when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
The occupants were washed away after the car fell into the canal. One person managed to survive by holding on to a tree and was later rescued with the help of local residents.
Youth Drowns in Telangana
In a separate incident, a youth drowned in the Nagarjuna Sagar backwaters in Telangana’s Nalgonda district.
Police said a group of friends had gone to the Vizag Colony backwaters for an outing and were swimming when Durga Tirumallesh was swept away in the Krishna River.
Local authorities conducted a search for more than two hours before recovering his body.
