One person was killed and four others injured after a shooting at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, police said, as separate gunfire at Virginia State University left five people wounded.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said the shooting occurred on Saturday evening at the downtown park, where five people were struck by gunfire. The injured included a four-year-old child, a 14-year-old and two adults. All four were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
A heavy police presence remained in downtown Lexington later that night, with several nearby roads closed as investigators worked at the scene. Authorities had not released details about a possible suspect or the person killed, and no arrests had been announced.
In a separate incident early Saturday, five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University, prompting a temporary lockdown of the campus.
The university said multiple suspects were involved and that police responding to a shooting outside a residence hall at around 1:30 a.m. local time found five people with gunshot wounds. One victim was critically injured, while the other four suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The lockdown was later lifted, with county and campus police investigating the incident. It was not immediately clear whether any suspects had been arrested.
Virginia State University is located in Chesterfield, Virginia. The new academic year was scheduled to begin on Monday, according to local media reports.
Meanwhile, at least two students were injured in a separate shooting at a high school in Houston County, Georgia, on Wednesday. A suspect was taken into custody in that incident.
