Bangladesh produced a stunning upset on Sunday, defeating top-ranked Australia by nine wickets in the opening Test at Marrara Oval to register their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.
Chasing 57 for victory on the fourth day, Bangladesh reached the target in 14.2 overs. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 30, sealing the win by cutting Beau Webster through the square boundary, while Shadman Islam finished on 25 not out. Bangladesh now lead the two-Test series 1-0.
The victory was Bangladesh’s second Test win over Australia, following their 2017 triumph in Dhaka, and their first in Australia in their third attempt. It also came after a difficult build-up in which Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side suffered an innings defeat against a Cricket Australia XI and were bowled out for just 54.
Australia resumed their second innings with hopes of setting Bangladesh a challenging target, but Cameron Green’s determined 104, his maiden Test century at home, was not enough. Green spent nearly five hours at the crease before Hasan Mahmud bowled him with a delivery that stayed low.
Mahmud was named Player of the Match after finishing with nine wickets for 111 runs, including a six-wicket haul in Australia’s first innings, when the hosts were dismissed for 198.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz then dismantled Australia’s middle and lower order, taking five wickets for 56 runs as Australia were bowled out for 284. He exploited the footmarks created by Mitchell Starc to keep the pressure on the hosts.
Bangladesh had earlier established control by posting 426 in their first innings, with opener Tanzid Hasan scoring his maiden Test century and Mehidy contributing a valuable 65.
The result guarantees Bangladesh cannot lose the two-match series. The second Test will be played next week at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
