US President Donald Trump has revived memories of his past meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, sharing a photograph from their 2019 encounter at Panmunjom and reiterating that the two leaders “get along GREAT”.
Trump posted the photograph on his Truth Social account on Saturday, noting that despite the serious expressions in the particular image, the two had shared many more cordial moments.
“Despite the unfriendly look on this particular picture, there are many where we’re smiling, Kim Jong Un and I get along GREAT!” Trump wrote.
The post comes as the White House continues to maintain that Trump is willing to engage with Kim without preconditions. However, prospects for renewed talks remain uncertain amid North Korea’s expanding economic, diplomatic and military cooperation with Russia.
Trump and Kim held three face-to-face meetings during Trump’s first presidential term. Their first summit took place in Singapore in June 2018, followed by a meeting in Hanoi in February 2019. The two leaders met again at Panmunjom in June that year.
The Panmunjom meeting attracted global attention after Trump crossed the Military Demarcation Line and briefly entered North Korean territory alongside Kim. He became the first sitting US president to set foot in North Korea.
Trump also shared a photograph from his first meeting with Kim in Singapore on Truth Social in June, fuelling speculation that he could seek to revive his personal diplomacy with the North Korean leader.
In an analysis published on Thursday, Victor Cha, Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), said Kim could potentially pursue another summit with Trump, possibly after the US midterm elections later this year.
Cha said such a move could come if Pyongyang adopts what he described as a “revisionist” approach aimed at further cementing its position as a nuclear-armed state.
