A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed during a training flight in northwestern Turkey’s Yalova province on Wednesday, but the pilot safely ejected before the aircraft went down, the Turkish Defence Ministry said.
The ministry said in a statement on social media that the aircraft was conducting a routine training mission when the accident occurred. The pilot successfully bailed out, while the circumstances that led to the crash will be established through a detailed investigation.
Ambulances and emergency medical teams were dispatched to the crash site following the incident, according to local media reports.
Television footage broadcast by Turkish news channel NTV showed a fireball and thick black smoke rising from the wreckage, with the plume reportedly visible from several locations across Yalova province.
The crash comes months after another Turkish F-16 accident in western Balikesir province. That incident, reported in February, killed the pilot. The Defence Ministry had said radio contact and the aircraft’s location were lost at 0056 local time on February 25 after the jet took off from the 9th Main Jet Base Command in Balikesir. Search-and-rescue teams subsequently located the wreckage.
The latest accident also comes days after Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on August 7. The pact states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be considered an attack against all three.
Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif signed the agreement during a joint defence summit in Mecca.
However, details of the specific commitments under the agreement have not been made public, including the extent to which the pact would require the three countries to undertake concrete military action in support of one another.
