A hoax bomb threat to the Ferozepur district court complex on Wednesday morning triggered a major security operation, with police evacuating the premises and deploying Bomb Disposal and Dog Squad teams to conduct an extensive search.
The incident comes two days ahead of the state-level Independence Day function, prompting security agencies to step up vigilance across the border district.
The court complex was evacuated soon after the threat was received. Police personnel, along with Bomb Disposal Squad and Dog Squad teams, searched the entire premises and adjoining areas, including different sections of the court complex.
No suspicious or objectionable material was found during the operation.
As a precautionary measure, court proceedings remained suspended until 1 pm, after which normal functioning resumed.
Station House Officer, Cantonment, Sukhbir Singh said the entire complex had been thoroughly checked and nothing suspicious was recovered. He said additional security personnel had been deployed and all necessary precautions were being taken to prevent any untoward incident.
The SHO said police would take all necessary measures to prevent anti-social elements from disrupting security arrangements, particularly in view of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
District Bar Association president Advocate Lovejeet Singh said such threats cause considerable inconvenience to litigants and other people, especially those travelling from distant areas to attend court hearings. He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and identify those responsible for creating panic and disrupting court proceedings.
Wednesday’s incident is reportedly the third hoax bomb threat received by the district court this year, raising concerns over repeated attempts to create panic through such threats.
Earlier, a similar threat email was received by the official email address of the Municipal Council. The premises were evacuated and searched by city police, but no suspicious material was found and normal operations resumed later.
Sources said some educational institutions in the district had also reportedly received similar threat emails, prompting security agencies to maintain heightened vigilance ahead of Independence Day.
