The AIADMK and BJP on Wednesday opposed a special resolution moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay against constituency delimitation, while stressing that Tamil Nadu’s parliamentary representation must not be reduced in any future exercise.
Participating in the Assembly debate, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said delimitation was not inherently objectionable if undertaken to improve administrative convenience. However, he maintained that Tamil Nadu should not be penalised for its success in controlling population growth.
Palaniswami said the AIADMK had already urged the Centre to safeguard the state’s existing share of representation during any delimitation exercise. He also referred to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s assurance that Tamil Nadu’s representation would not be reduced.
The AIADMK leader said protecting the state’s representation ratio could, in fact, lead to an increase in its Lok Sabha seats, potentially taking the number from the existing 39 to 59. He added that constituencies with very large electorates could be reorganised for administrative purposes without disadvantaging Tamil Nadu.
Palaniswami accused the TVK government of introducing the resolution for political reasons before the implications of the proposed delimitation exercise were known. He said the AIADMK opposed the delimitation resolution but supported the proposal concerning women’s reservation.
BJP MLA M. Bhojarajan also opposed the resolution, questioning its urgency when the delimitation exercise remained at the proposal stage.
Bhojarajan said electoral boundaries should evolve in line with changing population needs and argued that the country must be prepared to undertake reforms required for future generations. Referring to the new Parliament building, he said it had been designed keeping future requirements in mind.
At the same time, Bhojarajan stressed that Tamil Nadu’s interests and political representation must be protected. He also highlighted the BJP’s support for greater political representation for women.
Despite agreeing that Tamil Nadu should not lose representation, the BJP legislator made it clear that his party would not support Chief Minister Vijay’s special resolution.
