Filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar has revisited the making of his landmark directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai, sharing a glimpse of the hand-drawn storyboards he created for the film as it marks 25 years since its release.
Farhan posted photographs of the storyboards on Instagram, revealing the detailed visual planning that went into shaping scenes of the 2001 film. The sketches included character positions and shot details, reflecting the filmmaker’s meticulous approach before the widespread use of digital storyboarding tools.
“Long before AI and before software was easily (think affordable) available, this was how I did my storyboards on Dil Chahta Hai. Hand drawn with every character looking like a fingerprint. Maybe that’s what made them unique,” Farhan wrote.
He also invited followers to identify the scene depicted in the storyboard.
Actor Karanveer Sharma responded by identifying the sequence and recalling dialogue from the film. He praised Dil Chahta Hai as a “legendary film” and said he could still remember its dialogues years after watching it.
The film, starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna, also featured Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia.
The 25th anniversary also prompted Farhan and producer Ritesh Sidhwani to reflect on the film’s legacy and the journey of their production house, Excel Entertainment.
In a statement, the duo recalled that they were 26 when they began work on Dil Chahta Hai and said they believed audiences would embrace new voices and unconventional storytelling. They also expressed their intention to support young filmmakers and encourage them to pursue bold ideas and distinctive narratives in the years ahead.
Dil Chahta Hai went on to become a defining film for a generation, particularly for its portrayal of friendship, relationships and contemporary urban life.
