Opposition parties on Wednesday accused the BJP-led government of deliberately prolonging the deadlock in Parliament over the alleged police excesses against students during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, after Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he was ready to respond to the issue.
The Opposition has been demanding Shah’s presence in Parliament and a statement on the police action against the protesting students. The issue has repeatedly disrupted proceedings during the Monsoon Session.
Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee alleged that Shah’s absence from the House indicated an unwillingness to answer questions raised by the Opposition.
“After breaking political parties and securing such a large majority, the fact that you (Home Minister Amit Shah) are avoiding the House or not coming to the House shows that, somewhere, you do not want to answer the questions raised by the Opposition,” Banerjee said.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh alleged that the government had deliberately allowed the session to remain stalled and questioned why Shah had offered to respond only with one day of the session remaining.
“Tomorrow is the last day of the session, and today he suddenly got ready. This means you deliberately created a deadlock and did not let the Parliament session run,” Singh said.
JMM MP Mahua Majhi said Parliament had lost valuable time because of repeated disruptions, walkouts and adjournments. She argued that Shah’s response, if made a week earlier, could have allowed the House to function normally.
“So much valuable time of the country was wasted, the country’s money was wasted,” Majhi said, adding that important issues should ideally be addressed at the beginning of a parliamentary session.
Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy also questioned why Shah had not responded earlier if there was nothing improper about the government’s actions.
“If he has not done anything wrong, what has made him hide all these days?” Reddy asked, alleging that the government was now attempting to shift the blame for the disruptions onto the Opposition.
The Opposition’s remarks came after Shah said he was “ready to answer everything” on the July 20 incident and accused Opposition parties of preventing a discussion.
The continuing disagreement over the proposed discussion has remained a major source of confrontation between the government and the Opposition during the Monsoon Session.
