Ahead of Independence Day, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has urged people across Delhi-NCR to avoid flying kites near elevated Metro corridors, warning that kite strings could come into contact with high-voltage overhead equipment and cause serious safety hazards as well as disruptions to train services.
Kite flying traditionally increases across the national capital around August 15. DMRC said strings can become entangled with the 25,000-volt overhead electrification (OHE) wires running alongside elevated Metro tracks or get caught in the pantograph of a moving train.
Such incidents can damage or trip the OHE and pantograph, potentially disrupting Metro operations. The risk is particularly serious for people using metallic maanjha, as direct or indirect contact with the live equipment can be fatal.
The Delhi Metro network currently spans 416 km across Delhi-NCR and is predominantly elevated. The elevated sections use 25,000-volt OHE systems to supply electricity to trains carrying passengers every day.
DMRC appealed to residents to fly kites only in open areas located safely away from Metro infrastructure, particularly elevated lines passing through residential neighbourhoods.
The corporation said it has put in place measures to minimise kite-related disruptions. Dedicated teams have been deployed around stations identified as vulnerable to such incidents and will remove kite strings whenever they are spotted near Metro infrastructure.
Train operators and station staff have also been asked to remain especially vigilant during the kite-flying season and promptly identify strings that could threaten the OHE or moving trains.
DMRC said public cooperation is essential to protect passengers, Metro staff and residents while ensuring uninterrupted services during the Independence Day period.
