Congress leaders on Wednesday demanded strict action against former JD-S MP Prajwal Revanna after a mobile phone was allegedly recovered from his barrack at Bengaluru Central Prison, where he is serving a life sentence.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said no prisoner should be treated as being above the law and called for stringent action against Revanna.
“His father is a minister, and his grandfather was the Prime Minister of the country. They consider themselves to be above the law,” Tiwari said, while referring to the allegations against Revanna and the reported recovery of the phone.
Congress MP Jebi Mather sought a detailed probe into how Revanna was able to access a mobile phone inside the prison. She said the circumstances surrounding the recovery needed to be thoroughly investigated and questioned whether political connections could have played a role.
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge said the law must apply equally to every prisoner, regardless of social or political status.
The recovery followed a surprise raid by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) at Bengaluru Central Prison on the instructions of Karnataka Home Minister. IPS officer Alok Kumar said the search began around 2 p.m. and covered VIP and high-security barracks, including those housing accused in NDPS, terror and Naxal-related cases.
A mobile phone was recovered from Revanna’s barrack, where another inmate was also present. Searches were also conducted in the barracks of actor Darshan and Pavithra Gowda.
Kumar said an investigation was underway to establish how the phone entered the prison, who owned it and how it was being used. A case has been registered following the recovery.
Authorities have also initiated action against prison officials over the security lapse. Jail Assistant Superintendent Eeranna Rangapur has been suspended for alleged negligence, while Jail Superintendent Ansuch Kumar has been served a show-cause notice.
Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a case involving the rape of a 48-year-old woman, intimidation and circulation of videos of the sexual assault.
The survivor, who worked as a domestic help at the Revanna family’s farmhouse in Hassan district’s Holenarasipura, had alleged that Revanna repeatedly raped her from 2021 and recorded the assaults, threatening to release the videos if she spoke about them.
Revanna left for Germany after the videos surfaced and was subsequently suspended by the JD-S. He lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election and was arrested after returning to India.
