At least seven people, including three children, were killed and four others injured after a landslide struck a residential settlement in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area early Wednesday amid persistent heavy rain.
The incident occurred around 3.48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Ashok Nagar, Chirag Nagar, where a portion of an adjoining hillside collapsed. Mud, large boulders and debris came crashing onto two to three row houses while residents were asleep.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the tragedy and said rescue teams were rushed to the site after receiving information about the collapse. He said the injured had been shifted to hospital and directed authorities to ensure they received necessary treatment.
Seven victims were brought dead to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. They were identified as Mohammad Samir Ansari, 14; Sahil Husen Abdul Kazi, 19; Aban Arif Shaikh, 2; Manat Arif Shaikh, 4; Marjina Arif Shaikh, 27; Viket Ramesh Yadav, 27; and an unidentified adult.
The four injured were identified as Sohel Ansari, 18; Mohammad Ansari, 14; Naimuddhin Eqbal Khan, 28; and Sajid Ansari, 16. They were rescued and admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla, where their condition was reported to be stable.
Rescue operations were undertaken by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force, Mumbai Police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation personnel.
The operation was complicated by the difficult terrain and extremely narrow access lanes in Gaushiya Chawl. The passages are so narrow that only one person can move through them at a time, preventing heavy earth-moving equipment from reaching the affected houses. Rescue personnel therefore had to use manual tools and handheld equipment to remove mud, debris and concrete slabs.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site, reviewed the rescue efforts and met affected families.
The Mayor announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased victim. The civic administration will also provide Rs 50,000 towards the medical treatment of each injured person.
Authorities have placed settlements located near hill slopes on high alert as heavy rainfall continues across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
