A Pakistani national arrested in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district was allegedly sent by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to collect information on Indian Army, Navy and Railway installations in the country’s eastern region, according to state police sources.
Wahab Alam was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police in Habra. During questioning, he allegedly told investigators that he had entered India through the India-Nepal border in 2012 and had since been living in different parts of West Bengal by frequently changing his locations.
The STF also recovered allegedly forged Indian identity documents, including an Aadhaar card, PAN card and EPIC card, from Alam.
Investigators subsequently arrested another person, Muhammad Izaz, from Topsia in east Kolkata. According to police sources, Alam had earlier stayed at Izaz’s residence and allegedly obtained the forged identity documents through him.
The STF is also examining Alam’s movements after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise began in West Bengal ahead of the recently concluded Assembly polls. Police sources said he left Topsia during that period and later moved to Habra, which is relatively close to the India-Bangladesh border.
Investigators suspect Alam may have been planning to leave India through Bangladesh. The STF is questioning both Alam and Izaz to identify their other associates and determine the nature of their activities.
Investigators are also trying to establish what information Alam may have allegedly transmitted to his handlers in Pakistan.
Reacting to the arrest, state Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the police.
She also alleged that such elements had been able to establish a presence in West Bengal because of what she described as the “nurturing by the previous Trinamool Congress regime”.
