The Special Investigation Agency (SIA) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday conducted searches at nine locations across the Union Territory in connection with the 1990 double murder of Kashmiri Pandit poet-scholar Sarwanand Koul Premi and his son Virender Koul.
Officials said the searches were linked to FIR No. 45/1990 registered at Dooru Police Station in Anantnag district, which has now been taken over for investigation by the SIA.
Premi and his son, residents of Soaf Shali village in Kokernag, were allegedly abducted from their home in 1990, tortured and killed. Their bodies were later found hanging from a tree.
The killings were among the brutal incidents during the militancy period that contributed to the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandit community from the Valley.
Premi was a respected poet and scholar who had advocated national integration, communal harmony and brotherhood between Kashmir’s communities. He had also participated in India’s freedom movement.
Wednesday’s coordinated searches were conducted at six locations in parts of Rajouri district, two in Jammu and one in the Valley, officials said.
The SIA is investigating individuals and properties suspected to be linked to the conspiracy behind the killings. Officials have not yet disclosed the identities of those whose premises were searched or whether any material was recovered.
The searches come amid renewed investigations into unresolved militancy-era cases involving Kashmiri Pandits. In June, the SIA filed a 737-page chargesheet in the 1990 killing of Kashmiri Pandit nurse Sarla Bhat, naming jailed Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik as the alleged mastermind.
Bhat was abducted near the hospital where she worked and later killed in Srinagar in April 1990.
The SIA’s latest operation is part of its broader probe into cases involving targeted killings during the militancy period. Further investigation is underway.
