Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and his wife, Dona Ganguly, have approached Kolkata Police after receiving death threats, officials said on Monday.
According to the complaint, filed by Ganguly’s personal assistant, two threatening letters addressed to Sourav and Dona Ganguly were received at the office of the Bengal cricket president. The letters, written in English, allegedly contained threats to “eliminate” the former cricketer and his family.
Family sources said similar letters had reportedly been received over the past six months. However, the latest communication, which allegedly carried explicit threats to their lives and safety, prompted the family to approach the police.
A written complaint was submitted at Thakurpukur Police Station, while the state government’s security department has also been informed about the matter.
The complaint stated that the family had been receiving letters containing objectionable remarks against Ganguly for several months. Initially, the communications were reportedly dismissed as expressions of personal resentment.
However, according to the complaint, two letters received on Monday escalated the matter by allegedly threatening the lives and safety of Ganguly, Dona and people working with them.
“Since the letters have escalated from derogatory communication to explicit threats to life and personal safety, we believe the matter requires immediate police intervention and investigation,” the complaint stated.
It requested the police to identify the person responsible and take necessary steps to ensure the safety of Ganguly, his wife and their staff.
Kolkata Police have initiated an investigation into the threats and are taking steps to assess and strengthen security arrangements for Ganguly and his family.
