A school headmaster was shot dead by unidentified assailants in broad daylight in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district on Saturday, with police launching an investigation into the murder.
The deceased, identified as Nazrul Islam, was the headmaster of a local school in Islampur. He was attacked in the Madaripur area while he was on his way to school in the morning.
Islam sustained a bullet injury and was initially taken to Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital. He was later shifted to a higher medical facility in Siliguri, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 1 p.m., police said.
Islampur police have started a detailed investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the area in an effort to identify the attackers. No arrests have been made so far, and the motive behind the killing remains unclear.
Islam’s daughter, Naina Khatun, said the family was unable to understand why her father had been targeted.
“My father was an honest man. He had no enmity with anyone. We have no idea why he had been killed,” she said.
The victim’s wife, Ruksana Khatun, said Islam had been speaking to her on the phone when the shooting took place. According to her, he managed to tell her that he had been hit by a bullet but could not identify the assailant.
Colleagues and fellow teachers described Islam as a dedicated and punctual educator and said they were unaware of any personal enmity involving him.
Local eyewitnesses said Islam, who lived near Ambagan crossing in Islampur, was not politically affiliated. They said he was travelling to school as usual when unidentified men intercepted him in Madaripur and opened fire. One of the bullets struck him, causing him to collapse on the road.
Police are continuing efforts to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing and identify those responsible.
