Students of a government-run boys’ school hostel in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district staged a protest on Friday after allegedly finding caterpillars in the food served to them, prompting the district administration to order an immediate inquiry into the complaints.
The protesting students marched from the hostel to the Collectorate carrying their food plates and raised slogans against the hostel management and staff. They submitted a memorandum alleging poor-quality food, negligence and misbehaviour by hostel employees, while demanding action against those responsible.
According to the students, caterpillars were found in the dal served with rice during lunch on Friday. They alleged that similar incidents had taken place several times earlier and claimed that despite repeated complaints, no effective steps were taken to improve the quality of food.
The students further alleged that the hostel was not following the government-approved menu and that they were frequently served undercooked rice and watery dal with insufficient ingredients. They also accused hostel staff and the warden of misbehaving with students whenever concerns were raised.
Some students alleged that employees involved in food preparation reported for duty after consuming alcohol and demanded money from students. They claimed that those who refused were threatened with complaints being sent to their families.
Taking note of the allegations, City Magistrate Bajrang Bahadur said the administration had ordered a detailed investigation into the matter.
“The students have complained about poor-quality food being served in the hostel and rude behaviour by the staff. After receiving the complaint, directions have been issued for an immediate inquiry,” Bahadur said.
He added that a four-member committee had been constituted to examine the allegations. The team has been directed to visit the hostel, record statements of students, inspect the food being served and review the overall hostel arrangements.
The Assistant Commissioner of the Tribal Affairs Department has also been called to assist in the inquiry. Officials said the committee would examine issues related to food quality, hygiene and hostel management before submitting its report to the district administration.
The administration said further action would be taken against those found responsible based on the inquiry findings.
The protest was called off after officials assured students that their complaints would be investigated and necessary corrective measures would be taken.
